Thomas (Tom) A. Counts, II was born and raised in Abingdon, Virginia and is a graduate of Abingdon High School. Tom attended Emory and Henry College, graduating with a double major in History and Psychology in 1977. Upon completion of undergraduate studies, Tom attended the United States Naval Officer Candidate in Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, eventually attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After completion of active duty, Tom obtained a Juris Doctor in 1985.
Tom began his legal career with Charlie Jessee in Abingdon in 1986 and practiced in Abingdon and surrounding Southwest Virginia until 1991 when he moved to the Washington, DC metropolitan area and began practicing as insurance defense counsel for State Farm Insurance Company trying cases involving motor vehicle accidents, premises liability and providing coverage opinions on a variety of insurance coverage and insurance policy interpretation issues. During this period, Tom also acted as a court appointed mediator and neutral case evaluator assisting persons and corporations involved in legal disputes with resolution of cases without resorting to the uncertainty of submission to trial. In 2006, Tom opened the Roanoke, Virginia office of Robey, Teumer, Drash, Kimbrell & Counts providing insurance defense representation and coverage interpretation on a number of types of injury cases throughout Central and Southwest Virginia.
Tom has tried hundreds of cases throughout Virginia, as well as publishing articles and providing lectures to other practicing attorneys on trial advocacy, insurance coverage and policy interpretation. Tom is also certified as an instructor in trial advocacy by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Tom returns to Abingdon joining Jessee, Read & Howard, PC with over 30 years of experience representing individuals and corporations on a variety of legal issues with an in-depth knowledge of civil litigation and trial practice.
